Finally! The Quietest Aquarium Air Pump

Eheim 400 Air Pump
Quietest Aquarium Air Pump

I have been on this quest to find the Quietest Aquarium Air Pump and boy what a journey that was. Don’t you just hate it when they say the pump is quiet and you buy it only to find out that you can’t sleep next to your aquarium because the hum is little too loud?.Sorry - had to get this off my chest.

During my quest I checked out the Tetra Whisper, Silent-Air X5 and the JW Fusion Air Pump 700 Aquarium Air Pump.I ended up buying the Eheim 400 Air Pump with diffuser. And while the quietest aquarium air pump is the one that’s unplugged- the Eheim Air Pump 400 was one of the quietest ones that I found. The pump gives a small hum but this is much less than the sound given by the water flow from my water filter.

Before buying the Eheim 400 Air Pump, I had a Fluval A849 Q0.5 Air Pump – not as quiet as they claim. The worst thing you could do is to buy a noisy aquarium air pump because the hum could be really irritating - that’s why it’s really worth buying a good quality one in the first place. Wish I had someone to tell me - Well you have me to tell you. Moving right along.

Eheim 400 Quiet Air Pump Benefits

One of the things that makes this a silent aquarium air pump is that it stays put, no moving around that’s because it has rubber suction pads at the base to dampen vibration which was great for me. I also balanced it on some filter foam to make it a bit quieter.

If you prefer to hang your pump in the vertical position, then there is a special hook that comes with the pump.  And by the way, you can regulate each outlet on this pump and also on each diffuser as a result you can customize your own bubble effect to your ambiance. The wall of bubbles also look pretty cool in the aquarium, not to mention that watching them can be quite therapeutic.

Anyway from what I can see so far, this unit seems very solid - so if you are worried about quality, then this air pump is well built and even better is that it comes with a solid three year warranty.

This pump comes equipped with non- clog diffuser/air stone. What this means is that you don’t have to replace them with any regularity so you don’t have too spend much to maintain your aquarium.

One thing I forgot to mention is that this aquarium air pump comes in three models the 100, 200 and 400, so you can choose the one that best suits size of your aquarium.

If you do decide to get this pump and you should let me advise you to install a check valve in the air line. I'll explain - what this does is that if the pump turns off, the water won’t siphon down the tube and blow up your pump.

Eheim 400 Silent Air Pump Cons

The downside I found with the pump was that the tubing that comes in the package was not long enough for both diffusers to be used, and you can't operate with one unless you have a T piece which is not supplied by the way so you might want to order extra tubing.

Conclusion

So far I have been satisfied with my purchase of the Eheim 400 Air Pump with diffuser. Is it the Quietest Aquarium Air Pump? Maybe maybe not, all I know is that for my needs it’s pretty quiet. My friend has a Tetra Whisper Air Pump that he swears by. In my opinion I don’t think it’s quieter but it's cheaper - may worth a look. Check them out and let me know what you think.
